Or, rather, vice versa.
elasticjazz is the term to question the boundaries of seemingly established categories or genres such as free jazz, free music improvisation or similar. It addresses the blurred while interconnected shapes of conventional categories which at their core defy any rigid definitons. Such definitions or conceptualizations stand in contrast with the space-time-bound actual performances or practices of – using another term for the intangible – “now music”. Things grow even more delicate taking the understanding into account that music by nature is exactly that which cannot be heared. Furthermore, this makes the concept of listening and listener questionable and calls for a transformative dealing with the idea of “making music”.
Another perspective is the reflection of what it means that each artist nowadays is representative of their own genre. Since if this should be the case, what about collective improvisation where indviduals – each with their own individual “style – gather for co-creating? It seems paradoxical inthe first place and at second look not plausible that this should result – on the spot – in a new, collective genre.
elasticjazz is jazz with elasticity – musical flexibility that doesn’t ask: “What’s allowed?” but rather: “What if?”
